Super73 RX: a high-end electric bike can tackle any road


The Super73 RX is the flagship model of an iconic brand of electric bikes. If you’re into electric bikes, you’ve probably heard of Super73. His motorcycle inspired designs are very popular and the RX is his top of the line bike with most of the features. I had the chance to drive it for a few weeks while my car was in the workshop and I could see firsthand how it behaves as a replacement for a car.

The RX is by no means considered a cheap electric bike. At $ 3,495, it’s a premium electric bike with a lot of cool features for both city and off-road riding.

The frame of the RX is made of aircraft grade aluminum alloy and is available in two colors: Carmine Red and Rhino Gray. It really pulls the look of the bike with the top mounted battery like a gas tank, as well as the dual tube design. It is very sturdy and can support riders weighing up to 325 pounds.

As cool as it sounds, it is also attractive to thieves. The thick frame makes it more difficult to use a standard U-lock. You have to press it against whatever you attach it to and risk scratching the paint in the process.

There are mounting points all over the frame, but there aren’t many accessories available on the Super73 website to take advantage of. The Super73 community is strong, however, so there are plenty of third-party accessories out there. If I had to buy one, I would definitely want a saddle bag or other storage to carry my things.

Performance and autonomy

Where the RX really shines is its performance. The hub motor is capable of producing up to 2000 watts of peak power. There are four different driving modes depending on how fast you want it to be maximum. By default it’s set to Class 2 mode, which goes up to 20 mph, but I’ve spent my time with it set to Unlimited.

You should definitely familiarize yourself with your local laws regarding electric bicycles, so that you know where you are allowed to ride and what the speed limits are. I do my best to stay within the speed limits, but there are times when I’m riding the streets where I feel safer going faster. Here in Los Angeles, we don’t have a lot of streets with bike lanes, so there may be times when I have to park in front of a moving vehicle because there isn’t enough room on it. shoulder. In these cases, I’m glad the RX has the ability to easily reach 28 or even 30mph to better accommodate the flow of traffic.

The range depends on how and where you ride. Super73 estimates that the 960 watt-hour battery travels over 40 miles at 20 mph using only the throttle, and over 75 miles using the Eco pedal assist mode. From my experience using the throttle at 20-28 mph on fairly flat roads, I could go about 30-35 miles before needing to recharge. However, you certainly notice a drop in performance as the battery loses its charge during a ride. The battery is removable so you need to take it with you and takes around 6-7 hours to fully charge.

The RX is a single-speed bike, but there are four levels of pedal assistance to control resistance, as well as four riding modes to limit your speed, all of which can be adjusted using the controller on the handlebars. left. It has a subtle LCD screen to show your speed, distance and remaining battery. However, if that’s not big enough for you, the RX can also connect to the Super73 app to use it as a display if you mount your phone on the handlebars.

For stopping power, the RX has highly responsive hydraulic disc brakes that are perfect for slowing you down to higher speeds. It also has a bright 600 lumen headlight and an extremely loud horn that I wouldn’t subject anyone to on a bike path. This is great for attracting the attention of cars on the road.

The suspension system is impressive, with an inverted coil spring fork with air assist up front and a coil spring monoshock at the rear. That, along with the big, thick 5 inch wide tires, makes the bike almost indestructible. It is fully equipped to handle the city’s roughest streets and the muddiest dirt trails.

Just pay attention to how much mud he can throw at you. Small fenders don’t do much to protect you there.

As comfortable as the RX is to ride, it’s not that comfortable to pedal. Because the Super73s are supposed to look like motorcycles, the seat is low at 32 inches and cannot be adjusted, so a tall person like me is not able to get proper leg extension on. small pedals and cranks. Luckily the seat is long and comfy enough that I can sit up, so pedaling is still possible to speed up and help with steep inclines, which is all you really need.

The thrust accelerator takes away from the aesthetics of the motorcycle. It’s a bit difficult to stay steady on bumpy roads and my thumb hurts after a while. I would prefer a torsion throttle to complete the look of the bike.

Who is the Super73 RX for?

If you’re buying a Super73 because of its design and for a motorcycle experience that doesn’t require insurance or registration, the RX has a lot to offer. This can be great for daily commutes, but can tear up the trails on weekends as well.

I had a lot of fun with the RX, and I actually feel safer riding it on the streets than any e-bike I’ve ever ridden before. It’s powerful enough to keep up with traffic and able to handle just about any road condition.

This is a great option for those on the budget and a garage to store one, but it may not suit the lifestyle of a person living in an apartment with stairs. It might not offer the flexibility to pedal comfortably like other e-bikes, but as a replacement for a car, it’s a lot of fun to take you from A to B.
