Native coffee brand hits Woolworths shelves


The First Nations-owned DHUWA Coffee brand is now on shelves in select Woolworths stores across the country.

DHUWA, pronounced ‘Dee-Wah ‘ and meaning ‘to feel alive’ in the Bidjara language, is 100% Indigenous owned and roasted in partnership with Australian coffee roaster Griffiths Bros. Coffee Roasters.

The DHUWA Coffee brand was born from an indigenous supplier company, Supply Aus.

Shawn Andrews, co-founder of DHUWA, director of Supply Aus and proud man of Mununjali Palawa, says the brand aims to create connection through coffee.

“As a modern Indigenous owned, managed and controlled business, we believe that a great cup of coffee connects us when we share stories, bond and nurture relationships,” he said.

“We call it ‘Reconciliation in a Cup’.”

DHUWA is a celebration of First Peoples culture and features eye-catching artwork by man Bidjara and Brisbane Indigenous Media Association CEO Jyi Lawton.

“DHUWA celebrates Indigenous peoples and their cultures, including the more than 300 languages ​​they speak,” Andrews said.

“It’s an ecosystem of reconciliation in itself, the coffee we create, the people we celebrate and the opportunities we provide to other Indigenous peoples.

Part of a larger plan, the DHUWA brand aims to become a self-sustaining coffee business, providing training and employment to indigenous peoples.

“It made sense to pair the world’s oldest culture with Australia’s oldest coffee roaster to provide customers with a fantastic way to start their day,” said Andrews.

Every packet of DHUWA coffee sold in Woolworth stores sees three percent of the proceeds donated to Dreaming Futures, a charity that supports Indigenous youth in home care connecting to the country, community and culture.

The brand sources coffee beans from Brazil, Colombia, India and Ethiopia as well as Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, and prepares their products in Naarm / Melbourne.

The CEO of Griffiths Bros. Coffee Roasters, Peter Patisteas, said the brand is thrilled to be working alongside DHUWA Coffee.

DHUWA Coffee will be available in three blends, “First Light” which is a light roast, “Kickstart” which is a medium roast and “Bigshot” which is a dark roast. All blends are available in select Woolworths stores.
