A Time Out Youth Center organizer says that if you or a young LGTBQ you know is struggling right now, they are providing therapy services for free.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – The quarantine has kept families largely at home for weeks now, and for LGBTQ youth whose families don’t accept them, it seems to be wreaking havoc.

Time Out Youth Center https://www.timeoutyouth.org/ in Charlotte, there has been an increase in the number of young LGTBQs seeking advice since the coronavirus crisis necessitated quarantine, as some do not have an accepting family life.

“For many of our young people, the family is not always the most supportive space,” said O’Neal Atkinson of the LGBTQ youth organization Time Out Youth Center in Charlotte.

Atkinson says it can go beyond feelings of non-acceptance and contribute to depression and anxiety.

“When you constantly get these messages that who you are is not normal, wrong, or just despised, these things are internalized,” Atkinson said.

Atkinson says quarantine seems to be taking its toll.

“We have certainly seen an increase in the number of people with access to counseling over the past month,” Atkinson said. Atkinson says some have even expressed hurtful thoughts.

“In counseling and even in our virtual spaces, we have had people who have expressed that being at home is very traumatic and triggering,” Atkinson said. “If you already have depression or anxiety, it really starts to erode a person’s resilience. “

Atkinson says that’s what setting up the Time Out Youth Center usually helps.“We’re kind of where they get what they need to be able to navigate other less inclusive spaces,” Atkinson said.

Since the quarantine closed their facilities, Atkinson says they have had an influx of young people using their digital platform.

“It’s a space where even when they’re not physically in our center, they can chat in real time with their friends,” Atkinson said.

While this may help some, Atkinson said families should try to find a way to coexist peacefully.

“Concepts like gender and direction, people have very strong feelings,” Atkinson said. “Even though maybe you don’t fully understand it, or even if you don’t necessarily agree with it, the way we talk to someone or how we talk about someone is free.”

Atkinson says that if you or a young LGTBQ you know is struggling right now, the Time Out Youth Center provides free therapeutic services.

Lawmakers back out of NJ’s weed bill https://disc-shelf.com/lawmakers-back-out-of-njs-weed-bill/ https://disc-shelf.com/lawmakers-back-out-of-njs-weed-bill/#respond Sun, 28 Mar 2021 22:34:22 +0000 https://disc-shelf.com/lawmakers-back-out-of-njs-weed-bill/ The fate of legislation to legalize marijuana – slated for a vote in the Legislature on Monday – is once again uncertain. The fate of legislation to legalize marijuana – slated for a vote in the Legislature on Monday – is once again uncertain.

In a Friday caucus meeting with Democratic senators, lawmakers decided to withdraw a so-called clean-up bill the governor demanded to correct what he saw as a flaw in the original bills passed. December 17th.

According to Senator Nicholas Scutari, sponsor of the legalization bill, members of the black and Latino legislative caucuses expressed strong objection to the clean-up bill, which specified penalties for minors caught in possession of marijuana.

Scutari (D-Union) said Sen. Ron Rice and others believe the new bill creates a new way for cops to re-initiate arrest and search tactics on minors – a practice that has fallen. disused in New Jersey police departments.

“This is precisely what I have been saying for a long time. My whole agenda is to keep kids out of the criminal justice system. I can’t support anything that pushes more black and brown children into the system, ”Co-Senator Teresa Ruiz told NJ Spotlight News.

After hearing their concerns, Scutari said he removed his name from the bill, along with Ruiz (D-Essex).

“If Ron Rice and the Black Caucus are against it, so am I,” Scutari said. “The governor is going to have to sign the invoices we sent him, or veto them conditionally. Enough is enough already.

Murphy’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Senate Speaker Steve Sweeney also did not immediately respond to the comments.

Two legislative committees approved identical versions of the clean-up bill on Thursday, NJ A5211 (20R). Under this legislation, law enforcement would be able to issue a “curbside warning” to minors or detain them for a “police station adjustment” that would direct them to counseling, community work or an addiction treatment program.

The changes would also reduce the minimum civil penalties from $ 250 to $ 50 for people between the ages of 18 and 20 caught with less than an ounce of cannabis. For more than one ounce, the penalty ranges from $ 100 to $ 500.

The road to legalizing marijuana for adult use has been long and tortured.

Scutari first proposed legislation in 2017. But the bill went nowhere because the government of the day. Chris Christie was adamantly opposed to legalization. But in 2017, Murphy was elected governor and vowed to legalize weed during his first 100 days in office.

Scutari dusted off his bill, but the legislature was unable to muster enough votes. Instead, they decided to submit it to voters in the form of a constitutional amendment. It went through a 2-1 ratio in November.

The bill has been dusted off again. It became two bills: one to legalize and establish a regulated industry for adult recreational marijuana, and a second to decriminalize possession of marijuana in amounts less than six ounces.

But over the past two months, the the invoices were abruptly withdrawn on a number of objections expressed by lawmakers and social policy advocates. Finally, it appeared that all differences had been resolved and both houses passed the two bills on December 17.

It was soon after that the governor’s office identified what it called “a drafting error” and demanded changes regarding minors.

Cri du Chat syndrome (French for “cri de chat”) is a rare chromosomal disease caused by missing or deleted parts of chromosome 5. Infants born with the syndrome often have a high-pitched, cat-like cry, hence the name of the disease. Since the disease is caused by missing parts of the short arm (p) of chromosome 5, Cri du Chat is also known as 5p- (5p minus) syndrome.

Symptoms

The main physical characteristics and symptoms of Cri du Chat syndrome are caused by missing or deleted genes in the small arm (p) of chromosome 5. Researchers suspect that the specific set of symptoms associated with Cri du Chat and the severity of these symptoms, is related to the size and location of the removed or missing part of the chromosome.

Like other chromosomal disorders, the symptoms and severity of the disease vary from person to person. However, there are a few key manifestations of the disease that are noticeable from birth. These distinctive features include:

  • Low birth weight
  • Bad sucking reflex
  • Slow growth or stunted growth
  • A shrill cry and meow that looks like a cat
  • Poor muscle tone

Although not all of the characteristics, many newborns with Cri du Chat have some distinct physical characteristics, including:

  • A small head (microcephaly) and a jaw
  • An unusually round face
  • Malocclusion of teeth
  • Eyes wide apart and tilted down
  • Additional skin folds around the eyes
  • Low ears
  • “Strap” of fingers and toes (syndactyly)
  • Cleft lip or cleft palate

As children with the condition grow older, they may begin to show and experience an array of Cri du Chat symptoms, as well as other disorders commonly seen in those diagnosed with the condition, including:

  • Motor, cognitive and speech delays
  • Moderate to severe intellectual disability
  • Psychomotor disability
  • Seizures
  • Behaviors similar to those of autism, such as clapping, swaying, and sensitivity to noise
  • Scoliosis
  • Congenital heart defects (approximately 15-20% of patients)
  • Hernias
  • Behavior problems such as temper tantrums and lack of attention / impulse control
  • Walk with a slow, careful gait or need mobility aids, including wheelchairs
  • Self-destructive behaviors like banging your head and scratching your skin
  • Recurrent infections (especially respiratory, ear and gastrointestinal infections)
  • myopia
  • Constipation
  • Renal or urinary abnormalities
  • Premature graying of hair
  • Sleeping troubles
  • Potty training problems

Causes

Cri du Chat syndrome was first described in 1963 by a French pediatrician appointed Jerome Lejeune. Lejeune is best known for discovering the genetic basis of Down’s syndrome (Down Syndrome).

The disorder is thought to be very rare – only about 50 to 60 infants are born with Cri du Chat in the United States each year. The disease tends to affect women more often than men and is diagnosed in people of all ethnicities.

Although Cri du Chat is linked to genes, it is not necessarily an inherited condition. Most cases occur de novo (or spontaneously) during embryonic development. Researchers aren’t sure why these deletions are happening. Parents of a baby born with Cri du Chat due to a spontaneous deletion will have normal chromosomes. Therefore, if they have another baby in the future, it is unlikely that another child will be born with the disease as well.

In some cases, the condition occurs because genes are translocated from one chromosome to another. This causes a rearrangement of the genetic material. Translocations between chromosomes can occur spontaneously or be transmitted by a parent carrying an affected gene.

Researchers suspect that people with Cri du Chat who have severe intellectual disabilities may have deletions in a specific gene, CTNND2. More research is needed on the potential link between disease symptoms and specific genes, but as more is learned about the relationship, it is likely that the cause will be better understood. Understanding why deletions in the gene occur will be an important part of guiding diagnosis and treatment to improve the lives of people with Cri du Chat.

Diagnostic

Most cases of Cri du Chat can be diagnosed at birth with a thorough evaluation of the newborn. The main physical features of the disease, especially microcephaly, are easily identified in newborns. Other associated symptoms, such as the baby’s “cat cries”, poor muscle tone and a poor sucking reflex, are also apparent soon after birth.

A few different types of genetic test, including karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and chromosomal microarray analysis, can be used to screen for deletions in chromosome 5 that are diagnostic of Cri du Chat.

A doctor may also order more specialized tests to determine if the deletions were spontaneous or came from a parent’s affected gene. If so, there are tests that can identify which parent has the translocated gene.

The increasing availability of more specialized genetic testing techniques has made it possible to diagnose some cases of Cri du Chat before birth.

Treatment

The severity of Cri du Chat exists on a spectrum. The experience of having, being diagnosed and treating the disease and its symptoms will be unique to each person who has it. Families with children with Cri du Chat often use many types of healthcare providers, including healthcare professionals, social workers, and education specialists. After the birth of a child with Cri du Chat, the parents are usually referred for genetic counseling.

Since Cri du Chat is often diagnosed at birth or soon after, families can immediately begin to build a support team. Early intervention helps families develop strategies to deal with the physical and emotional differences children with Cry of Cat face compared to their peers.

The majority of children diagnosed with Cri du Chat begin some form of therapy before their first birthday. This often includes a combination of physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. If a patient has an associated health problem, such as a congenital heart defect, they will also need more specialized medical services in addition to routine care.

Parents may need to seek out community and academic resources to help children with Cry of Cat adjust to school. Special education programs are an option, depending on the type and extent of the child’s learning and / or physical disability, as well as taking into account their social and behavioral needs. Some families choose to home school their children with Cri du Chat or enroll them in specially designed schools or programs.

The life expectancy of Cri du Chat patients is not directly affected by the disease, although the complications of its characteristics, such as the development of aspiration pneumonia if they are prone to respiratory problems, may present a risk. In many documented cases, children with Cri du Chat lived to middle age and beyond. However, people with Cri du Chat are not always able to live independently. Many adults with the disease will need health, social, case management, and professional services.

Alternative and complementary therapies may also be helpful for patients with Cri du Chat, especially during childhood and adolescence. Play therapy, aromatherapy, music therapy, and therapy involving animals have all been beneficial for children with Cri du Chat.

For children with more severe disabilities, they need feeding tubes (parenteral nutrition), and those who engage in severe self-injurious behavior may require additional care. Home nurses, community living or nursing facilities are also options for families who need help to help their child live full, safe, happy and healthy lives.

A word from Verywell

Cri du Chat symptoms exist on a spectrum and can include severe intellectual and physical impairments, delays in speech or motor functions, and behavioral problems or other medical conditions, such as congenital heart defects or scoliosis. . Complications from the disease, or those that commonly accompany it, can cause serious health problems, but it is important to remember that most people with Cri du Chat live to middle age and beyond. -of the.

New Jersey was the focus of a panel at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital virtual conference, in the wake of New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signing recreational cannabis.

Jelani Gibson, specialist journalist for NJ Cannabis Insider, spoke to Jen Drake, COO of Ayr Wellness (CSE: AYR) (OTCQX: AYRWF) and Nick Vita, CEO of Columbia Care (NEO: CCHW) (CSE: CCHW).

Sales of recreational cannabis are expected to begin before the end of the year.

An increase in demand: New Jersey could become the new hub for massive cannabis sales, as people from neighboring states, like New York, come to buy legal adult cannabis.

Operators and lawmakers now fear that leisure buyers will jump across state lines, affecting access for medical patients.

“Access is very important,” says Drake. “But access starts with food and culture. “

There are currently 12 licensed medical marijuana operators in New Jersey, covering less than 300,000 square feet of cultivation, 10% of which is owned by Ayr.

However, this is not enough to cover the increase in demand that the state will soon be faced with. Lawmakers take the need to secure medical supplies very seriously. The new laws require the entire industry to expand, with more growth operations, more dispensaries, and more quality testing centers.

During the first two years from the implementation of the Adult Use Regulation, a total of 37 licenses will be granted for cultivation.

All 12 medical marijuana licensees will be able to apply for licenses to grow, process, sell and distribute for the recreational market.

“New Jersey has gone through a very disciplined legislative process,” says Nick Vita of Columbia Care. “One of the priorities is to ensure that there is adequate access, not only for the adult program, but for medical care. “

The state appoints an independent arbitrator who will examine the market and the supply chain, to ensure that access to medical cannabis is never limited to patients, Vita explained.

Implement social justice: “When we talk about social equity, there are so many things that come into play. Obviously, access is important, but also the ability to participate in the new industry and the ability to do so in a really profitable way, ”says Drake of Ayr Wellness.

In early February, a bill was introduced to the New Jersey legislature to create a program that subsidizes the costs of medical marijuana for patients in financial need.

“When Senator Singleton and Assembly Member Reynolds Jackson put forward their proposal to create some form of subsidy, it was a really powerful indication that sets the national tone, to make sure that if you are a consumer, you born [stopped] by an economic limitation, ”says Vita.

Columbia Care also has a mandate to promote and encourage professional growth through workforce development programs aimed at vulnerable populations such as women, veterans and POCs, Vita added.

His company aims to tackle New Jersey’s social issues with specific localized social equity policies, from an inclusion and diversity perspective.

Ayr’s “Accelerator Program” provides mentorship to social equity candidates who receive education, training, industry connections, and access to the company’s human and business resources. The program has already been implemented in Massachusetts and Ayr plans to replicate it in New Jersey.

Diolch.“(It’s Welsh for” thank you. “) The third season, which will continue with Dafne Keen, Amir Wilson, and Ruth Wilson, are slated to shoot in Cardiff in 2021.

While the first two seasons did a commendable job of bringing the books’ fantastic imagery to life – including the bear in armor, demons, witches and interdimensional portals – the third season will pose fascinating creative challenges. How will they adapt Lord Asriel intention craft? Or the sensitive elephant-trunked beasts known as mulefa, whose faces are based on a diamond axle and which roll on wheels? Or how about literal hell? If they launch Luca Marinelli and Marwan Kenzari of The old guard as OTP Balthamos and Baruch of the book, we will be satisfied.

Growing old is not easy and one of the biggest concerns of the health of the elderly is social isolation. As family members move away and friends die, older people can feel lonely and disconnected. Isolation is a key predictor of depression and maybe a reason why so many older people have the disorder. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up to about 5% of older people suffer from major depression, and the figures rise to 13.5% for patients requiring home care and 11.5% for older hospitalized patients.

So it stands to reason that staying socially connected can help. Modern technology gives us all new ways to stay in touch with our friends and loved ones, and a recent study, published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, reveals that one technology seems to work better than any other: the cat. video.

Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon, reviewed four online communication technologies to see which best help older people:

  • Video chat
  • E-mail
  • Social media networks

Older adults (around 65 on average) who used email, instant messaging, or social media platforms like Facebook had roughly the same rate of depressive symptoms than those who did not use any communication technology. But people who used video chat apps like Skype and FaceTime had nearly half the estimated likelihood of depressive symptoms, after adjusting for other factors, such as pre-existing depression and education level.

The benefits of social connection

The study was led by Dr. Alan Teo, associate professor of psychiatry at OHSU. This was a follow-up to an earlier study by him, published in 2015, which investigated other modes of social contact and risk of depression in the elderly. “In this study, we found that the face-to-face and in-person time was the best. The more often the elderly got together with their loved ones, the lower the rates of depression, even years later, ”says Teo. “The phone and email weren’t as beneficial.”

After the publication of this study, Teo wondered what would reveal more modern modes of communication, such as social networks and video chat platforms. He interviewed over 1,400 seniors who self-reported their use of these various modes of communication and their depressive symptoms.

“The initial impression we got was that the more different technologies people used might indicate a lower risk for depression, but that didn’t seem to explain it,” says Teo. “It was really video chat. It was well known that the use of video chat reduced rates of depression. It was the unique advantage.

“It’s not incredibly surprising,” says Dr. Philip R. Muskin, professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City. “Solitude is a route to depressive symptoms. In anyone, but certainly in the elderly, the more socially interactive you are, the less likely you are to be depressed. And video chat “really lets you interact,” he says. “It doesn’t equate to presence, but it’s real-time and it’s more compelling and engaging than talking on the phone or using email or any of the other technologies. By e-mail, no one understands my jokes. I am using (video chat) to see my grandson.

Face to face time is gold

The study is correlational rather than causal, so we cannot say that using video chat prevents depression. (Teo is currently writing a grant proposal to examine the cause-and-effect relationships between depression and solitude interventions.) And adults in their 60s – the average age of study subjects – are generally no longer considered “seniors.” Teo did not analyze the data to see if the relationship between video chat and depression changed as subjects got older.

But these potential problems don’t diminish the study’s results, Muskin says. “Hiring an elderly parent is a great thing to do,” he says. “It probably takes longer for Skype and FaceTime, but it suggests you should think about doing it. For seniors who aren’t tech savvy, many senior centers offer help if their adult children or grandchildren aren’t there to teach them. “Talk to your loved ones. Encourage people to get involved, ”says Muskin.

“The judicious use of technology and video chat that comes as close as possible to mimic face-to-face contact is the gold standard here,” Teo concludes. “Quality time spent face to face with loved ones is one of the best things we can do for our long-term and sustained emotional health. The larger message here, he says, is that fight against loneliness and social isolation in everyone, not just the elderly, requires creative solutions. “It won’t come from taking pills,” Teo says. “When I use FaceTime with my father, who is 80, it’s a learned behavior. Using these behavioral approaches is likely to be helpful.

Sharon Osbourne, long the “big girl with the big voice” of “The Talk,” is unsure whether she will return after the network finishes its investigation into last week’s racial dust. his defense of Piers Morgan.

The interruption of production on the CBS Roundtable, which was placed on a two day break after Osbourne and co-host Sheryl Underwood got tangled up last Wednesday, has been extended for a week Tuesday.

Osbourne, 68, recounted “Entertainment tonight” the same day she felt she had been created by CBS executives. She spoke of a pact the panelists reportedly made in February after Carrie Ann Inaba surprised fellow co-host Elaine Welteroth with a question posed to her by the producers.

Inaba, who is of Asian American descent, asked Welteroth, who is black, what Osbourne called a “very naive” question about why whites couldn’t use the N word. After Welteroth and Inaba both found each other in tears, Osbourne said, they all agreed that in the future they would not go blind with surprise questions.

Last Wednesday, Osbourne said, a producer asked her if she would “clear up the Piers case again” even though “maybe one of them doesn’t agree with you.” But she didn’t expect Welteroth to bring up anti-racism, and she didn’t expect Underwood to suggest she was covering up racism.

“I was set up,” Osbourne said “ET,” describing his thoughts at the time. “And I went, like, how dare you all do this to me?” I am your sacrificial lamb.

Osbourne admitted to “trying” her 11-year-old friend Underwood, including when she told Underwood “don’t try to cry,” reserving that right for herself.

“I got too personal with Sheryl. I should never have said [anything] about her tears. I should never have dismissed his feelings on national television. Never. But I said it, I have to own it, ”she said.

Then she added fiercely, “I was so angry. I can’t begin to tell you. But not with Welteroth or Underwood. His anger was directed at CBS, his 11-year-old network.

“I think CBS was so horrified of Piers for the things he was saying – because remember Harry and Meghan this is a CBS interview,” she said, alluding to his comments. former colleague of “America’s Got Talent” that former Meghan Markle was lying mental health and suicidal thoughts.

Morgan, who was quickly accused of racism for her responses to Meghan and Prince Harry Oprah Winfrey Interview, leave “Good Morning Britain”, the television show he co-hosted, having abruptly left the set last week.

Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, reported Wednesday that she had received a record 57,121 complaints, including one from the Duchess of Sussex herself, linked to her “Good Morning Britain” remarks about Meghan and Harry’s conversation with Winfrey. (“Only 57,000? I’ve had more people than that come down the street to congratulate me on what I said,” Morgan said in a mocking tweet Wednesday.)

Winfrey’s interview aired in the UK on March 8, a day after it aired in the US and drew high marks.

“I had sided with Piers, so that’s the culture of cancellation, isn’t it?” Throw her under the bus, ”Osbourne said.

The panelist said both “The Talk” showrunners were in tears after the clash, but declined to tell him the names of the executives they believed prompted the questioning.

Underwood, who preceded her request by saying that Osbourne had always been open to corrections and willing to learn, asked her co-host what she would say to people who thought she was giving shelter to racist comments.

Osbourne responded by asking Underwood to tell him what Morgan had said that was racist, and the cat quickly and emotionally spiraled from there.

“I even feel like I’m about to be put in the electric chair because I have a friend who a lot of people think is racist, which makes me a racist,” Osbourne said on “The Talk”. “And for me, at 68, to have to turn around and say, ‘I’m not a racist’. … How can I be racist towards anyone or anything in my life? How can I?”

Osbourne explained to “ET” on Tuesday, “I just thought this was the biggest setup ever, and I’m falling in it, and I’m going deeper into that hole.” Meanwhile, Underwood addressed the situation in a two-part discussion about his podcast last week, saying she experienced the heated exchange differently.

After the uncomfortable episode, other accusations emerged – from former “Talk” co-hosts Holly Robinson Peete and Leah Remini, who only lasted one season – that Osbourne had used slurs on them and others during his time on the show. Osbourne has denied Peete’s claim that she had the two fired from the show for being too ‘ghetto’.

Osbourne told “ET” she had called for an investigation into who brought up the Underwood issue and why she was “left out” on national television.

CBS said in a statement Tuesday that it is “committed to a diverse, inclusive and respectful workplace in all of our productions.” We are also keenly aware of the significant concerns expressed and ongoing discussions regarding events on “The Talk”. This includes a process where all voices are heard, complaints are investigated and appropriate action taken if necessary. “

Osbourne said she apologized to Underwood but had not received a response. Her too apologized publicly last week via social media, noting that she was truly sorry “to anyone of color I have offended and / or anyone who feels confused or disappointed with what I have said.”

As for the future of ‘The Talk,’ said Osbourne, ‘I wish we could go on and have a calm adult conversation and make it happen. But I don’t know if we can. I don’t know if it got past that. But I don’t know if I want to go back.

“I don’t know if I’m wanted there.”
